Math 2nd 9 Weeks

Math (2nd Nine Weeks)

Math- Unit 2- Multiplication and Extending Division, Measuring Angles, Analyzing 2-D Figures

Essential Questions for this unit are:

  • How are remainders and divisors related?
  • (Measuring Angles)  What are the characteristics of angles?
  • (Analyzing 2-Dimensional Figures)  Where do I see parallel and perpendicular lines in everday life?
  • How do I use the classification of 2-D figures to compare and contrast characteristics?

When we finish this unit, students should have an enduring understanding of the following topics:

  • Area models of mulitiplication explain the distributive property and partial products.

multiplication and division using area model

  • Division with remainders involves thinking about what is to be done with the remainder e.g. cookies can be kept but extra children needing transport on a trip cannot be left behind.
  • There is a relationship between multiplication and division.  Fluency with facts must be developed.
  • Multiplication and division problems can be made easier by the development of a story to connect the numbers.
  • Rounding is a form of estimation that changes numbers in a problem to make it easier to compute mentally.
  • Estimation strategies have two main purposes.  They are used for prediction and to determine reasonableness of an answer.
  • Variables are used to express general rules about numbers, number relationships, and operations.
  • Dividing by a two-digit divisor involves estimation and multiplication.
  • Dividing by a two-digit divisor involves the decomposing of the dividend into groups (quotient) and that there may or may not be a remainder.
  • There are many different ways to see and describe similarities and differences among shapes.  The more ways that shapes can be sorted, identified, and described the more they can be understood.
  • Two dimensional figures can be classified by their characteristics.
  • Angles are composed of two rays that share a common vertex.   The size of the angle is dependent upon the spread of the angle's rays.
  • Points can be graphed and located using ordered pairs within the first quadrant of the coordinate system.
