Friday Q & A

What is the policyWho selects students for school activities? Is there a set criterion or guidelines for selecting students for these activities? This goes for all school activities. I would be happy to answer this question, but I need more information. Do you want to know about during the school day activities, after school PTA clubs, school sponsored clubs, ASP activities, etc.
I would like to address the issue with the K-2 campus drop off in the am. While I know it is preferred in the afternoons to enter from the South Cobb side that is not convenient for me in the mornings. I have experienced numerous times that the lane coming from South Cobb will not stop pulling into the school and the line from Concord can’t turn in. Everyone should be courteous and alternate cars every other car Can this be brought up on the questions and answers? Let’s all start our day in a courteous way!
We are dedicated bus riders, but this week I’ve had to drive my child in the morning. I have been surprised at just how very, very dark the parking lot at the 3-5 campus is for AM drop-off! I don’t know if this is due to construction, or just how the parking lot is at this time of year, but it feels unsafe and makes me very nervous. With children jumping out, walkers coming up the sidewalk, and cars driving every which way it would be nice to be able to see better. If it is due to construction, could we have the contractor put up some lights? Portable gas powered light plants are something every jobsite uses and would be easy for them to set up in the evening and just have in place for the morning carpool. At this time of year it is definitely dark outside in the mornings. I will work with maintenance to make sure all of our exterior lights are working. We will look at adding some additional lights for safety.
Is there a problem getting substitute teachers? My son told me that when teachers are absent the classes are getting split up instead of getting a sub. Can parents help with this? For the last several years, subs have been limited to working 120 hours per month. The subs that are highly requested book their calendars ahead of time to stay within their hour limit. When a teacher is absent and we put the absence into our electronic system, we cross our fingers and hope it fills! If the absence does not fill, we do have to split the class between the other classes in the grade level. If there are any parents out there that would like to become a substitute teacher, please visit the Cobb County School District website!
A recent siting at the K-2 campus has raised concerns about a possible swooping event on the playground.
