The Junior Master Gardener program began at King Springs 3 years ago when five staff members and one parent took a summer course offered through the University of Georgia. ibm.com, equipped with a $5000 Lowe's grant, built the lovely outdoor classroom located directly behind the media center to accomodate the club and science instruction throught the school.
The club is open to a limited number of students in grades 3 - 5 and meets each Wednesday immediately after school. Students finishing club activities and activities at home earn certification in eight areas:
- Plant Growth and Development
- Soils and Water
- Ecology and Environmental Horticulture
- Insects and Diseases
- Landscape Horticulture
- Fruits and Nuts
- Vegetables and Herbs
- Life Skills and Career Exploration
There is a service component to each of the areas of emphasis.
