Hi Parents,
Next week is Winter Break so we are working hard to finish up some projects and activities over the next week. All students are working on a power point presentation. We have really been honing in on presentation skills specifically. The kids will be presenting their information next week on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday.
I want to thank all of you who have sent in extra supplies and snacks this week! We are all stocked up again and it is greatly appreciated.
The 2nd Rock Eagle payment is due this Friday. The next payment will be due March 1st. Let me know if you aren’t sure about your payments. The chaperone applications are due this Friday as well. We will send them off for background checks and then decide who will go. This year is going to be very tough because I have a LOT of parents who have applied to go. In situations like this, I will randomly draw names at our team meeting because it’s just too hard to pick with so many great applicants.
Here are a few curriculum updates and reminders:
Reading/ELA
• Determine the theme in poetry and support it with evidence. Langston Hughes- “Thank You M’am” and “Mother to Son”
• Inventor power points are due Wednesday. Students should be practicing their power point presentation at home. They have 2 rubrics that will be used for grading. One is for the actual power point and one is for their speaking and listening skills.
• Book Clubs continue- All groups will be using “Stop and Jot” strategies to show their thinking while reading.
• Reading response rubric for weekly letters will be changing. Students will be required to use and identify compound and complex sentences in their responses. (Counts for ELA grade)
• Students should continue to complete the monthly reading log. This month they are required to read at least 30 minutes for 12 nights and record it. Due February 28. They will earn a 100% for fully completing and turning in the reading log on time.
• Rewrite a narrative from another character’s point of view- The Wolf’s Story
• Spelling and Vocabulary- Greek and Latin roots – test Friday
Math-
• Checkpoint on fraction line plots Friday (2/8). Students are using line plots to find a “fair share” or average.
• Study Guide for Fraction Unit test will be given out on Friday (2/8). We will go over it in class on Monday and Tuesday. It is EVERYTHING we’ve learned about fractions. The Test will be on Monday.
Social Studies-
• Roaring 20s Bowl Game will be on Monday, February 11. Students need to have both of their categories ready and the answers memorized. Winners get to choose between and ice cream sundae party or a pizza party!
• After our unit on The Great Depression, we will head into World War II.
• Quarter 3 Social Studies Challenge will be announced next week after the Bowl Game! They’ve been asking what it is which makes me happy!
Science-
• Animal and Plant Cells- the kids have been having lots of fun and learning so much while making their cell models in class. The creativity (and materials they are using) have been off the charts! I love watching them work on these projects. They also have a fun Cell Rap Song that Ms. Pope taught them. Have them sing it for you! You’ll never get it out of your head.
Thanks for your time and let me know if you have questions.
