Dear Parents,
I hope this Monday finds you well. Here are a couple of things going on this week.
On Thursday, November 12, our third grade will be performing at PTA. Please make sure to attend. The kids sure get a kick out of performing for their parents.
I forgot to send home the progress report Friday. I will do so this Friday. It will be a summary of two weeks worth of work. Work samples will be sent home with the students at that time.
Make sure that your child reads at least 20 minutes a night. There has been some confusion about reading log and the reading log sheet. The stamp in the agenda is for nightly reading. It is a self monitoring check for you and your child. When your child is finished with a book, then they write it down on the reading goal sheet. All the students have made their monthly readingb goal for November. Remember, they set it themselves and they are responsible for meeting their goals. I need to each student to accept that responsibility without fail.
It is important that each child knows their math facts-be it addition or multiplication-automatically. I like to tell the kids that this is called automaticity-if I wake them up at AM asking for math facts, they should be able to tell me. We are working on multiplication and division. A lot of the students are still struggling with their times tables. Pleas make sure your child studies at least 10 facts a night. Right now I still have students struggling with their squares and twos.
Another subject that is being neglected is spelling. I rely on each child to do the spelling homework so that they prepared for the test in Friday. As I look over the grades, I find myself disturbed at the percentages. Since the sorting was not working, I have given the students new homework. You will find it in their BEE book. They are to do one a day and it is to be done in their journal. So they have two daily homework without fail-spelling and writing. I will be looking for both daily.
Finally, there is a growing concern with me about students not making it to class until after the bell rings. When I ask where they have been, they cannot give me a straight answer. Then another student tattles on them. When students come in late, they cannot practice their math facts and the day gets off on a slow start. With so much to do, we start off the bat at 8.05. Because of the tardiness, I have to wait for them to unpack, get settled, and then find their folder-it is now 8.20. The bell rings at 7.50-I need the students to be in class by at least 7.45. Talk to your child about the responsibility they have to make it to class on time--time management is a life-long skill.
I look forward to seeing all of you at the performance. The students are working really hard on their in class writing and problem solving. I am amazed at their thoughts and ideas they put on paper
