Chicks and Salsa by Aaron Reynolds

Img148985
Where would chickens find chips? Or ducks get avocados? Or pigs find nacho cheese sauce? Well, no one is quite certain how it all happened. But, it all ended up in one big FIESTA... or not! What happened to all the ingredients? What will the barnyard animals do? That rooster has an idea!

This is a funny story with bright illustrations. Don't miss the recipes in the back for Hog Wild Nachos, Quackamole, and Rooster's Roasted Salsa.

The Wright 3 by Blue Balliett

Here is another book by Blue Balliett. Have any of you read her first book, Chasing Vermeer? I haven't, but this book takes up with some of the same characters: Tommy, Calder, and a new supersleuth named Petra. The setting for this book is Oak Park, Illinois. I liked reading this book because I used to live close to Chicago and when I took the train into the city we would stop in Oak Park where there are 25 houses designed by a very famous American architect, Frank Lloyd Wright.

Tommy, Calder, and Petra set out to save what must be the most famous of these houses, the Robie House. This is quite a mystery with a significant amount of danger and intrigue. You have scarey suspense in a creepy vacant house... at night. Tell us if you like it.

Scuttle's Big Wish by Sean & Ryan Delonas

You would like this funny book if all you did was look at the pictures. Scuttle is a mouse but he looks like a hamster with a tail... very cute... even when he becomes roly-poly large eating too much cheese. His best friend's name is "Tweet"... a bird of course. The bad guy in the story is "Pounce"... guess what he is?

After you read Scuttle's Big Wish you should read a very old fairy tale about King Midas:
King Midas and the Golden Touch

Don't miss the note at the back of the book: "In loving memory of Scuttle, who was....."

This book is on a 4th grade reading level but it is a great read aloud and the pictures are fun, fun, fun!

Enjoy,

Double Identity by Margaret Peterson Haddix

While in Denver last week I was able to read three new books. "Double Identity" is written by the same author as The Shadow Children series (Among the Hidden). I know some of you enjoyed that series this year. "Double Identity" is about a girl named Bethany who is about 13. The book starts with her father stuffing the family into a car and driving for hours to a place Bethany has never been. He leaves her with an aunt she has never met and drives away. She has no way to even call her parents and tries to figure out what is happening... why she has four different birth certificates with four different last names... who is Elizabeth... and why do people in the town look at her as if they are seeing a ghost. It was a very interesting read from cover to cover.

Let me know how you like this book... or if you have read any other books by Haddix that you liked.
